To do a cold clone P2V you’ll need the VMware converter bootCD. Yesterday I was at a customer where I performed a P2V of a Microsoft Windows 2008 Domain Controller. The best practice to P2V a DC is performing a so called “cold clone”.

To do a “cold clone” we need the latest VMware converter bootCD. you’ll be able to download this if you have at least an Enterprise license for ESXi and you’ll need to perform the following steps:

  • Go to the VMware website: http://www.vmware.com
  • VMware
  • Click on Support & Downloads (step 1) and then on VMware vSphere in the Product Downloads session (Step 2)
  • Download
  • The following page will show up, Click on Download drivers & Tools:
  • Drivers
  • The following screen will show, click on 4.0 (Other versions of VMware vSphere):
  • version4
  • After this scroll down to Enterprise or Enterprise Plus Downloads and click on VMware vCenter Server 4.0 Update 3 and Modules:
  • vcenterclick
  • The following screen will show, make sure update 3 is selected and click “Show Details”:
  • Showdetails
  • Check if the VMware vCenter Converter BootCD is present, and press Download:
  • download (2)

As said you must have an enterprise (plus) license of VMware to be able to download this.
